Who has historically been allowed to speak for a continent, and who has only ever been spoken about?

For centuries, the world learned about Africa primarily through the voices of outsiders: explorers, missionaries, anthropologists, journalists and foreign correspondents who often spoke about the continent more frequently than Africa was allowed to speak for itself. Voices from Africa confront that inheritance directly, asking what changes when African stories are told from within the complexity of the places, cultures and communities they describe.

The issue also turns its questions inward. What does it mean for an African publication to represent a continent as vast and diverse as this one? Can any platform claim to speak for fifty-four countries, or does the responsibility lie in continuing to make room for voices it has not yet included? Rather than offering one definitive answer, Voices from Africa embraces the tension. It refuses the idea that there is one singular African voice, just as it refuses the expectation that a magazine should simplify difference in order to create unity.
