Editors’ Code of Practice
Overview
54 Magazine adheres to the Editors’ Code of Practice established by IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organisation). The code represents the framework for the highest professional standards that subscribing publications commit to maintain.
Key Principles
Accuracy
Publications must avoid publishing inaccurate or misleading information. Significant errors require prompt correction with appropriate prominence and, where warranted, an apology. Fair opportunity to respond should be provided to affected parties.
Privacy
Individuals are entitled to respect for their private life. Editors must justify any intrusions into personal matters without consent, considering public disclosures and existing information in the public domain.
Harassment
Journalists cannot engage in intimidation or persistent pursuit. They must identify themselves and respect requests to cease contact or leave property.
Children
Special protections apply to minors. Children under 16 require parental consent for interviews or photographs regarding welfare matters. The press cannot identify children involved in sexual offence cases.
Financial Journalism
Reporters cannot profit from advance financial information or write about securities in which they hold significant interests without disclosure.
Confidential Sources
Journalists maintain a moral obligation to protect source confidentiality.
Public Interest Exception
Certain clauses may be overridden when demonstrating genuine public interest, including crime detection, public safety protection, and exposing serious impropriety.
