Can people imagine tomorrow without setting fire to yesterday?

Afrofuturism asks what becomes possible when Africa imagines its future on its own terms. For too long, the future was presented as belonging to someone else’s vision, while the continent was cast as a place perpetually catching up to a modernity invented elsewhere. This issue challenges that inheritance by placing African imagination, ancestry and creative authority at the centre of the conversation.

Our cover story features musician Sampa the Great, whose work holds ancestral rhythm and forward motion in the same breath. Her music refuses the idea that tradition and progress must exist on opposite sides of history. Instead, it shows how the past can become a source of propulsion, not an anchor and how memory can help build futures that feel both radically new and deeply familiar.
